Riverbank Stabilisation and Scour Protection, River Laden
Erosion and scour were affecting the riverbanks around a bridge, with degradation visible around the bridge abutments and surrounding embankments. High Water was brought in to develop a practical stabilisation solution that would protect the banks while working sensitively within the existing watercourse environment.
The works covered approximately 36 linear metres of riverbank, extending around 6 metres upstream and downstream of the bridge on both banks. The existing erosion was causing continued loss of bank material, creating a need for a solution that could improve stability while limiting disruption to the surrounding environment.
High Water developed a nature-based stabilisation system using driven timber posts and brushwood fascines. The approach was designed to provide effective erosion protection while allowing the riverbanks to naturally regenerate over time.
Timber posts were driven into the riverbank at regular centres and used to secure brushwood fascines, creating a continuous erosion protection system along the affected sections. Biodegradable coir matting was installed where required to help retain exposed soils and support vegetation establishment. The works were undertaken primarily from the bank top using small plant and manual installation techniques, helping to minimise disturbance to the watercourse.
The completed works provide a practical, low-impact solution to the ongoing scour and erosion. The project was also completed ahead of schedule, delivering the required stabilisation works efficiently while maintaining the environmental approach of the original design.
The completed system helps dissipate flow energy and trap sediment, while the brushwood fascines and coir elements support natural vegetation growth. The result is a combination of bank protection, improved stability and environmental enhancement, designed to provide longer-term protection to the affected embankments.
